Innovative students won the Lee Kuan Yew Award
To help workers and their supervisors, students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) developed safety glasses that has won them the highly prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award.
When maintenance work is being done underground, supervisors will be able to view and access the process of maintenance real-time through a wireless camera fixed on the safety glasses. Also, the new safety glasses will enable defaults to be rectified in a timely manner.
The students believe their innovation will also benefit teachers and trainers. “They can monitor their students’ at work easily and correct their mistakes immediately”, said Nicholas Chan, 28.
Nicholas, a Nitec in Aerospace Avionics graduate, also shared that the research and experimentation of the project took seven months. Their lecturer, Mr Chia, mentioned that the safety glasses with a wireless camera is the first-of-its-kind. He believes that such opportunities to innovate developes creativity, responsibility, a competitive spirit and motivation among students. He is confident that the experience gained will benefit them when they move on to the working world in future.
The Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award is presented to students who have developed excellent projects that embody quality, technical innovation and creativity. The projects are also expected to have industrial applications.
The award was given out at the Student Achievers Awards, which was introduced in 1998, to recognise and inspire students.
